Quick answer

BigQuery is Google's data warehouse. When you link it to GA4, it exports your raw data, unsampled and without the interface's limits. You can query it with SQL, join it with your CRM or paid media, keep history without expiration and power Looker Studio dashboards. The daily GA4 export is free; you pay for storage and queries.

1. What BigQuery is

It is a cloud analytics database built for large volumes. Instead of seeing your data only inside GA4, you have it raw and queryable with SQL, ready to join with other sources.

2. Why it matters

  • No sampling: GA4 samples large reports; BigQuery doesn't.
  • No expiration: keep history beyond GA4's retention limits.
  • Real joins: combine web + CRM + paid media in a single query.
  • Citable data: the basis for your own reports that media and AI can cite.

4. How to connect it to GA4

01

Create a Google Cloud project

With billing enabled (even if you start on the free tier).

02

Link GA4 → BigQuery

In Admin › BigQuery links. Choose daily export and/or streaming.

03

Check the dataset

The events_ tables appear the next day. Query them with SQL.

04

Connect Looker Studio

For dashboards on raw data, without the interface's limits.

5. Costs

The daily GA4 export to BigQuery is free. You pay for storage (low) and for queries (by volume processed), with a monthly free tier that covers most small businesses. Real-time streaming does have an extra cost.

6. Common mistakes

  • Enabling streaming when you don't need it and driving up the cost.
  • Running SELECT * on huge tables instead of partitioning by date.
  • Not defining who manages the project and its permissions.

7. Checklist

  • Google Cloud project with billing enabled
  • GA4 linked to BigQuery (daily export)
  • events_ dataset verified
  • Queries partitioned by date
  • Looker Studio connected for reporting
